Through AAD humanitarian programs, we carry out our commitment to educate the public about healthy skin, hair, and nails in an effort to motivate them to take positive action in improving their quality of life, and in the case of skin cancer, save lives. Additionally, we recognize the importance our employees place on their ability to give back to their communities and to charities they feel close to and support those efforts through our employee programs.

Ways the AAD helps the public

It is currently estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Numbers like that make a world without skin cancer seem an impossible goal. But it is within our reach.

A world without skin cancer is an achievable goal and the American Academy of Dermatology is committed to reducing the incidence of and mortality from skin cancer. Public education is the key. By educating the public about how to reduce their risk of skin cancer and how to spot skin cancer, we can help change behaviors and ultimately save lives.

The AAD’s SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign is the solution

The American Academy of Dermatology cannot achieve this goal alone. While we know there are thousands, if not millions, of individuals, organizations and corporations that share our goal, we need to present a united front to be the most effective with our combined efforts. That’s why the AAD launched SPOT Skin Cancer™. This large-scale public awareness campaign is designed to involve the public, the AAD’s membership of more than 20,500 physicians worldwide, other health organizations, media, and for-profit corporations to advance the public’s understanding of skin cancer and motivate them to change their behavior to prevent and detect skin cancer.

Camp Discovery for kids

Camp Discovery offers kids living with skin disease a one-of-a-kind experience. Every summer, the AAD sponsors six weeks of camp in five locations where everyone can experience activities such as fishing, horseback riding, and just plain fun!

Shade structure grants

The AAD's Shade Structure Grant Program awards grants of up to $8,000 to public schools and non-profit organizations for installing permanent shade structures for outdoor locations that are not protected from the sun, such as playgrounds, pools, or recreation spaces. In addition to the grant, the AAD also provides a permanent sign for display near the shade structure.

Since its launch in 1999, the AAD's Shade Structure Program has awarded 400 shade structure grants, which provide shade for over 3 million individuals each day.

Skin Cancer Take a Hike!™

With the AAD’s Skin Cancer Take a Hike!™ you can join a hike in your area or donate to an upcoming hike. This program supports skin cancer screenings, provides grants to install shade structures, and provides sunscreen dispensers to communities throughout the U.S. Every step is a step towards a world without skin cancer.

Ways AAD employees can give back to their community

Employee matching gift program: We gladly help support the charitable efforts of our employees by giving them 50 percent of every dollar they donate to an eligible charity, up to $100 per year.

Volunteerism program: Employees receive 7.5 hours of paid volunteer time each calendar year. Time can be used in hourly increments.
