DWI&I Holiday Greeting 2020

For my 65th birthday this year, my wonderful older brother George presented me with a marvelous gift — a leather-bound compilation of the front page of The New York Times including every May 21 from 1955 to 2020. Certain years take special significance in our personal and collective lives. Anyone of my generation can easily relate to 1963 (Kennedy assassination), 1969 (Lunar landing), 1986 (Challenger disaster), and 2001 (9/11). No doubt 2020 is on the list. I will leave it to future historians to comment on the confluence of viral, social, and climactic upheavals in an election year.
I wonder what Einstein would have thought about time and space in 2020. At times it feels as though this year has lasted a decade. It is a testament to the dedication and resilience of our colleagues having rapidly navigated and adjusted to pandemic realities at home and in our practices. As I am writing this commentary, we are at a precarious, yet hopeful, juncture, when the feared COVID-19 surge is increasing exponentially, and the anticipated successful vaccination program has been launched.
The end of the year is a time for reflection and hope. Everyone reading this commentary has been affected by the pandemic. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a loved one, or who has taken ill with the virus, and has had lingering sequelae.
From the DWI&I perspective, I want to offer a special thank you my associate editor Danielle DeHoratius, who managed to do her work despite personal travails that would have impeded most mortals, and to Richard Nelson, our managing editor, who is indefatigable, working his magic every week. I am grateful to our entire editorial board who work so diligently and ably throughout the year. Every expert offering their viewpoints deserves thanks. This year, I would especially like to express my gratitude to Misha Rosenbach for his heroic efforts in providing his expertise on COVID-19, literally on a moment’s notice.
Finally, a thank you to the readership of DWI&I. Earlier this year, when I participated as faculty at the Dermatology Foundation meeting in Naples, Florida, I was genuinely touched when I learned how many of you look forward to reading our weekly commentaries. In less than two years, we are approaching half a million page views, which is astonishing.
I will make no predictions for 2021, other than affirming that we at DWI&I will continue to strive to provide stimulating, current, and practical offerings for dermatologists. On behalf of the entire editorial team of DWI&I, please accept our best wishes for health, peace, and wisdom for the year(s) ahead for you and your families.
